DEVORAN OLD SCHOOL SITE PLANNING BRIEF
Residents of Devoran will be aware that the former school site in Market Street will be the subject to redevelopment at some time in the near future.
In order to protect the site from inappropriate development, the Parish Council commissioned a Planning Brief in 2007/8, the results of which are available for viewing on this site under "Consultations". While the consultation was completed some time ago you may find it helpful to use the document to help understand the parish council's continuing position regarding future use of the building and how parts will be protected for community use.
The Brief was adopted as formal planning policy by Cornwall Council in August 2009 and will unquestionably inform any planning determinations for the site, whoever is involved in the site in the future.
The parish office has recently met with the existing owners to reaffirm their stance on this important issue for the village. Fundamentally the Brief will ensure that any future redevelopment of the site will provide for a mixed development that enhances community life in Devoran, safeguards the existing nature and character of the buildings, provides high quality development that protects the local amenity of neighbours, and maintains local distinctiveness.
The vision within the Brief are to ensure continued use and satisfactory repair of the Grade 2 Listed Building, and the provision of an environmentally sustainable scheme which will enhance the appearance of the Conservation Area. It is also expected that the eventual use of the buildings will contribute to daily life within the village.
The Brief concludes that the key uses for redevelopment should include a mix to facilitate residential, community and commercial uses which will be sympathetic to its status, accord with national planning policies, provide for a vibrant environment and socially diverse mix of occupants, and contribute to the well being of local residents for the foreseeable future.
The parish council will continue to work with both the Diocese and Cornwall Council and new owners if possible to ensure the realisation of these aspirations.
Please do not hesitate to contact the parish council for more information.
